Bathing with a Sitz Bath Helps Reduce Discomfort in the Genital Area, Interested in Trying it?

Health 1458

Sitz bath is a warm water bath using a shallow basin. The purpose of this procedure is generally to relieve pain, burning sensation, itching, or discomfort. The targeted location is the perineum, the area between the anus and the external genitalia (scrotum or vulva).

This method can also help relieve pain or itching in other genital areas. This procedure does not require a prescription from a doctor, so anyone can do it as a routine procedure to clean the perineal area, including children (as long as it is done under parental supervision).

Function

The main function of a sitz bath is to reduce muscle spasms by relaxing the anal sphincter (the ring that opens and closes at the bottom of the anus). Through this method, muscle tension can be suppressed, increasing blood circulation, which can speed up healing and reduce pain. This procedure is often recommended for various medical conditions, including:

1. Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the anus or rectum. Sitz bath can help alleviate pain and swelling caused by hemorrhoids and aid in the healing process, especially after hemorrhoid surgery.

2. Postpartum

New mothers often experience pain and discomfort in the perineal area, whether they have had a vaginal birth or a cesarean section. Sitz bath can accelerate the healing of pain and swelling in these areas.

3. Bartholin's Cyst

Bartholin's cyst is a type of cyst that forms near the opening of the vagina. Sitz bath can help these cysts rupture and heal on their own.

4. Anal Fissure

Anal fissure is a tear in the lining of the anus or anal canal. Sitz bath can help relax the muscles, aiding in the healing process over time.

How to Take a Sitz Bath

A sitz bath can be done in a bathtub or using a kit (a small plastic basin attached to a toilet seat). Soak the anal area for about 15 to 20 minutes. Generally, warm water alone is sufficient, and there is no need to add any substances unless recommended by a doctor.

1. Bathtub

  • Clean the bathtub before starting the procedure.
  • Fill the bathtub with warm water (around 40 degrees Celsius) to cover the perineum about 7 to 10 cm deep.
  • Ensure the temperature is not too hot to avoid skin burns.
  • Bend your knees or hang your legs on the side of the bathtub to keep them dry.

2. Using a Kit

  • Sitz bath kits usually include a shallow basin slightly larger than a toilet bowl. Place this basin between the toilet seat and the bowl.
  • Fill the basin with warm water before use and replace the water when it starts to cool.

Additionally, some sitz bath kits provide a plastic bag with a long tube at one end. Fill the bag with warm water and let it flow into the basin through the connected tube. When the water cools, a new batch of warm water can be released from the plastic bag.

After finishing, dry the buttocks and perineal area with a clean towel. Pat-drying is recommended, as rubbing can cause irritation. Discard the used water, and clean the bathtub or plastic basin. Sometimes, the procedure may need to be repeated 3 to 4 times for optimal results.

Potential Risks

Sitz baths rarely pose significant risks. If any, occurrences are minimal, such as infection due to not cleaning the bathtub or kit or when performed immediately after perineal area surgery. This procedure can be done by anyone, regardless of any specific conditions. However, if discomfort or worsening symptoms arise, stop the procedure and contact a healthcare provider for additional guidance.
