As simple as it sounds, self-control is the ability to control oneself to avoid temptation and resist unwanted behaviors or urges, in order to achieve long-term goals. Self-control is an important aspect to help one plan, monitor and achieve their goals. There are 3 types of self-control, namely:
1. Impulse control
The ability to manage urges (impulse). If you don't have it, then someone will tend to act without first thinking about the consequences of their actions.
2. Emotional control
The ability to regulate emotional responses. If you don't have it, then a person will tend to have difficulty controlling emotions, such as overreacting, being in a bad mood for a long time, and eventually being overwhelmed by how intense the feelings are.
3. Movement control
The ability to control how and when the body moves. If you don't have it, then a person tends to find it difficult to stay still in conditions that make them anxious.

Self-control refers to the ability to control oneself to resist temptation in order to achieve a certain goal.
Why is it important?
Good self-control can improve a person's health and well-being, meaning that they can be healthier and happier, both in the short and long term. For example, a child gets good academic grades during education, a worker experiences increased financial stability, and cardiovascular health in old age.
However, it is important to note that putting too much pressure on one's willpower can be detrimental. This is because there are factors that cannot be controlled. For example, when concert savings inevitably have to be diverted to pay for hospitalization due to illness or other unexpected costs.
Examples in Daily Life
Willpower alone does not determine whether you will achieve a goal or not. Therefore, there must be a clear (specific) goal and strong motivation. There are many examples of self-control in everyday life, and maybe Ladies have already applied some of them. What are they? Here are some examples:
- Implementing a healthy lifestyle, such as eating a balanced nutritious diet and exercising regularly
- Buying what you need instead of what you want to save money
- Avoiding social media while at work so as not to interfere with productivity
- Trying to reduce sugar intake by avoiding sugary snacks or drinks
- Being able to manage emotional responses to something that makes you feel upset or angry
- Delaying gratification (delaying short-term desires for long-term rewards, e.g. not spending money on expensive clothes to save up for a concert in the future)

Be specific with your goals and stay motivated
Tips to Improve Self-Control
1. Avoid Temptation
Of course, self-control will not be separated from one's ability to resist temptation, whether it is the desire to shop, eat, drink, or something that is not urgent. If the temptation arises, then try to find other alternatives, such as taking a walk in the park, meeting friends, or cleaning the house.
2. Plan for the Future and Focus on One Goal at a Time
Planning ahead is a good step, but it's important to focus on one goal at a time. This is because setting many goals at once is not effective and there is bound to be a lot of imbalance between them. So, focus your energy and thoughts on just one goal.
The goal is clear, the motivation is there. Then what else? Of course, monitoring the progress you've made. One easy way is to apply SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound). The goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
3. Practice
Continuous practice will help improve self-control ability. If it is not like that, then self-control will slowly disappear. Analogously, if you work hard at a young age, regardless of how tiring it is, you will have a prosperous life in old age.
4. Meditation
Not everyone is used to meditation. However, this method can be useful for strengthening self-control. One of the goals of meditation is to become more self-aware, thus better able to resist temptation. Another benefit of meditation is that it helps to slow down and calm the mind, so that it can dispel anything that gets in the way of improving self-control.
5. Remember the Consequences
While self-control can help you achieve your goals and improve your physical and mental health, a lack of self-control can take a toll on you. From self-esteem, education, career, finances, relationships, to overall well-being.
