Can Breastfeeding Mothers Fast or Not?

Health 1003

In general, breastfeeding mothers are exempt from fasting. If the body feels fit and feels that no obstacles will occur, then breastfeeding mothers can fast. However, there is a big concern that is experienced, which is the fear that what is done will affect the milk supply, especially in exclusively breastfeeding mothers.

Does Fasting Reduce Breast Milk?

Some studies, albeit limited in number, suggest that fasting may temporarily change the milk content. If the mother is severely dehydrated and unable to meet her nutritional needs, this may result in a reduced milk supply. On the other hand, other studies have shown no significant difference in the content of key macronutrients in breast milk during Ramadan fasting.

Fasting during Ramadan while breastfeeding does not adversely affect your child's growth. Although it is still allowed, mothers should still pay attention to danger signs, both in their bodies and their babies. Here are the things to look out for:

  • Mother: headache, dizziness, decreased amount of urine, and dark yellow color (signs of dehydration)

  • Baby: losing or not gaining weight, reduced frequency of diaper changes, baby is unhappy after feeding, or seems depressed

If your body is not feeling well, then consider whether or not to continue fasting.

Fasting Tips for Breastfeeding Mothers

Again, fasting is not compulsory for breastfeeding mothers, but breastfeeding mothers also need to ensure that their babies are fed breast milk regularly to prevent a decrease in supply. Therefore, for those who want to continue fasting this Ramadan, here are some simple tips that need to be done:

1. Keep your body hydrated

Drink more water (little by little, not all at once) during non-fasting hours. Drinking too much at one time will only cause you to urinate more often, and as a result, you will be thirsty more often.

2. Fulfill nutritional needs

Eat a nutritionally balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, and vegetables and fruits. This will help you maintain the energy you need to breastfeed your baby while fasting.

3. Break your fast appropriately

When it's time to break your fast, you should immediately cancel it, keeping in mind not to overeat. The aim is to allow the mother to restore her energy as quickly as possible in order to recover quickly.

4. Make sure the milk comes out smoothly

If the baby is getting fussy when breastfeeding at the end of the fasting day, then stay calm because it may be due to a reduced milk supply. Also, the mother's stress management must remain good. Recognize this condition by squeezing the breast starting from the back of the breast. The goal is to transfer the milk so that the child.

5. Reduce activity

Too much movement may cause the mother to fatigue or sweat more. Therefore, avoid strenuous activities and avoid hot weather during fasting.

Fulfill your nutritional needs, drink plenty of water, break your fast as soon as possible, reduce activity, and ensure smooth breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding mothers are still allowed to fast during Ramadan. However, whenever you feel too passive, you should reconsider whether you should continue fasting or stop.
