1. Honey

Honey has long been known as a remedy for coughs and sore throats. Typically, honey is consumed by mixing it into water, tea, or warm lemon. This strategy has been proven to relieve cough symptoms in the short term. Not only does it help relieve coughs, but it can also make sleeping more comfortable. Honey can be consumed by anyone except babies under 12 months old.

2. Ginger

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve coughs, especially dry coughs. Add ginger to cooking or mix it into drinks, such as herbal tea, lemon, or warm-boiled ginger water. If there are no adverse symptoms after taking it, it can be continued, but if you experience a stomach ache, use other home remedies.

Drink warm drinks with added ginger.

3. Throat Lozenges

There are many throat lozenges sold on the market. These hard candies help stimulate saliva production and are a natural cough reducer. Consuming throat lozenges works well as a dry cough medicine. These candies can be consumed, but that doesn't mean as much as possible. It's also a good idea to choose sugar-free products.

4. Consume Warm Drinks

Drink all kinds of warm fluids, such as water, herbal tea, soup, or fruit juice. Increasing fluid consumption helps the immune system fight the source of infection or the virus that causes coughing. Additionally, we need to drink more fluids because dehydration can occur when coughing.

5. Gargle with Salt Water

Apart from honey, gargling with salt water may have been a habit passed down from generation to generation in families. Mix salt with warm water. This method can help relieve flu symptoms and coughs and even prevent infections, but it is not recommended for children and people with hypertension. The steps to do this are as follows:

  • Stir half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water.
  • Let the solution cool slightly for a moment.
  • Leave this solution in the back of your throat before you're bumping and spitting it out.
  • Do this several times every day until the cough subsides.

Gargle with salt water.

6. Take a Warm Shower or Use a Humidifier

Mucoid coughs may improve with steam. The method is to shower or bath in warm water and let the bathroom fill with steam. Could you just do it for a few minutes? Another home remedy for coughs is to use a humidifier. If this is not possible, then try the following strategies:

  • Fill a large bowl with hot water.
  • Add eucalyptus oil or your favorite essential oil.
  • Lean over the bowl and place a towel over your head (to trap the steam from the mixture of hot water and eucalyptus or essential oil).
  • Breathe in the steam for 10 to 15 minutes.

You can try many home remedies to relieve coughs, such as consuming honey, ginger, throat lozenges, warm drinks, gargling with salt water, and using steam strategies. These methods may produce different effects on each person. Therefore, if one of them doesn't work, try another strategy. Come on, read other Fitie articles!
