Superkomputer Ini Terinspirasi dari Gunung Keramat!

This supercomputer is inspired by a sacred mountain!

Technology 1235

Who says traditional beliefs always clash with modern technology? This Japanese supercomputer is actually inspired by a local belief that is still held firmly today.

Introducing, here's the Fugaku supercomputer!

Sacred Mountain?

Fugaku is the Japanese name for an iconic mountain believed to be the gateway to heaven and the dwelling place of gods. Do you know what mountain that is?

That's right, Mount Fuji!

The Riken Center for Computational Science, the manufacturer of Fugaku, chose Mount Fuji because it epitomizes the fantastic and monumental nature of Fugaku, a supercomputer designed to replace its predecessor, the K (kei) supercomputer.

Operating since March 2021 after a trial-and-error process since November 2021, Fugaku is one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. With a speed of around 4 quadrillion computations per second, Fugaku is a thousand times faster than conventional computers.

So fast!

Imagine, in just seconds, Fugaku can complete tasks that would take hours for a regular computer! With this capability, it's no wonder that Fugaku is considered one of the great leaps in the world of computing.

However, as technology demands continuous development, Fugaku, once recognized as the world's number one supercomputer, has now been surpassed and ranks fourth.

Even though it's no longer in first place, with Fugaku, you don't have to worry at all about buffering, lag, and other obstacles.

But surely, a supercomputer isn't just made for streaming favorite movies or playing games, right?

What's Its Purpose?

Supercomputers like Fugaku are made for a clear purpose, which is to investigate and solve challenges in the fields of science and technology, such as weather and climate simulations, medical research for developing new drugs, data analysis for disaster modeling, and more.

For instance, Fugaku, with its ability to process and analyze data on a scale unreachable by other computer systems, was instrumental in addressing the Covid-19 pandemic, accurately predicting the spread of Covid-19 infections.

Not only that, Fugaku was also used to screen thousands of drugs to find potential drugs that can block the main protein replicating Covid-19. As a result, these potential drugs were discovered and served as the basis for developing new drugs effective in combating this global pandemic.

What's even cooler is that Fugaku only took ten days to complete its simulations. Compare that to a normal computer that would take years!

So, it's true that when technology is used for positive purposes, the results are beneficial for humans and other living beings.
