On Wednesday (15/12/2021), we received heart-wrenching news about the passing of Edelnyi Laura Anna. A tragic accident left her paralyzed two years ago due to a spinal cord injury. This condition forced Laura to spend extended periods in bed, leading to decubitus ulcers. Laura often shared her journey battling pressure sores through her Instagram account, always maintaining a cheerful spirit without complaints.
Understanding Decubitus Ulcers
Decubitus ulcers, commonly known as bedsores, are open sores resulting from prolonged skin pressure. These sores tend to develop where the skin covers bony parts of the body, such as the pelvis, back, ankles, and buttocks. The location of decubitus ulcers can vary, depending on where pressure is consistently applied.
For individuals using wheelchairs, these sores typically appear in regions like the buttocks, coccyx, spine, scapula, and the areas where the arms and legs make contact with the wheelchair.
Conversely, bedridden individuals are more prone to sores on the back and sides of the head, shoulder blades, hips, tailbone, lower back, heels, ankles, and the backs of the knees.
Causes of Decubitus Ulcers
While pressure and friction on the skin are primary causes of decubitus ulcers, other factors can increase the risk of their development, including:
- Decreased sensation in the affected area.
- Inadequate fluid and nutrient intake.
- Impaired blood circulation.
- Urinary and fecal incontinence.
- Obesity.
- Age over 70 years.
Laura Anna's passing has deeply saddened her friends, family, and even her social media followers. Laura's unwavering strength and positivity have left a lasting impact on those who followed her journey. As we remember Laura, may she find eternal peace and comfort in heaven.
