Safe Place for Women

Creating Safe Spaces for Women

Lifestyle 1542

The recent surge in disturbing incidents involving women as victims, prominently highlighted on the internet, raises a crucial question: Where can women find a safe space to voice their concerns?

Safety Concerns for Women

Have you heard about the distressing incidents involving Muslim women wearing head coverings while praying in women's prayer areas, only to be harassed by men? Or the threads on Twitter where women discovered hidden cameras in shower cubicles and women's locker rooms? To make matters worse, according to a study by a Singaporean research company, Value Champion, Indonesia ranks as the SECOND most unsafe country for women in the Asia Pacific region.

On the surface, there may seem to be various access points and designated spaces for women. These include women's carriages on commuter trains and TransJakarta buses, breastfeeding rooms, special seating for pregnant women on public transportation, and more. However, vulnerabilities persist and are often exploited by sexual offenders.

Hidden Cameras and Victim Blaming

One disturbing example is the presence of hidden cameras in public women's bathrooms. Unsuspecting victims find themselves unwittingly captured in compromising videos distributed without their consent. Tragically, the victims often bear the shame and anguish of the ordeal. They took precautions and thought they were going to a place meant exclusively for women—a place of privacy. Yet, evil intentions from others beyond their control prevailed. Regrettably, these victims are frequently subjected to blame. They're judged based on their clothing and gait; somehow, they're made to feel responsible for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The sex offender and their supporters often assert, "You invited this upon yourself!"

Addressing Harassment in Sacred Spaces

Now, consider the case of women facing harassment while praying in places of worship dressed in religious attire. Those who bravely speak out and share their experiences, hoping to raise awareness or seek justice, often encounter victim-blaming comments. This discourages victims from coming forward and sharing their stories. Some even internalize the blame as their own. For them, social media, once a place of leisure, becomes a source of fear due to triggering content.

Support and Healing

After seeking professional help to heal from trauma, victims require a safe and supportive environment, whether in real life or on the internet, in addition to the support of their families and close friends. New Femme offers a discussion forum envisioned as a safe space for women. Here, they can share their experiences, exchange ideas, seek solutions, and access education on women's issues. By fostering greater understanding and awareness of social problems, particularly sexual crimes, we can collectively work towards creating a safer and more orderly environment for everyone.
