Tips for Maintaining Children's Dental Health

Health 1084

Tooth decay, also known as caries, is one of the most common health problems in children. Untreated cavities can cause pain and infection can cause problems when eating, talking, playing, or studying. Children ages 6-8 have at least one cavity in their baby teeth. The good news is that cavities are a preventable condition. The following article will discuss some tips for maintaining the health of children's teeth.

Tips for Maintaining Dental Health for Babies

Here are tips for maintaining healthy teeth for babies:

  1. Even though the baby doesn't have teeth yet, parents should also clean the baby's mouth by wiping the child's gums using a clean soft cloth in the morning after breakfast and at night before going to bed. This is done to clean bacteria and residual sugar that can cause cavities.
  2. When teeth appear, make it a habit to brush your child's teeth twice a day with a small soft-bristled toothbrush and plain water.
  3. After turning one year old, get your baby checked by the dentist for signs of a problem as early as possible.
  4. Apply fluoride varnish to your child's teeth after their first teeth appear. Make sure you have consulted your doctor first.

Tips for Maintaining Dental Health for Children

Here are tips for maintaining healthy teeth for children:

  1. Brush your child's teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Accompany the child when brushing his teeth to make sure the mouthwash is drained and not swallowed.
  3. Limit consumption of sugary foods and drinks.
  4. Ask your dentist to apply dental sealant if needed.

How to teach children to brush their teeth properly

As parents, we need to teach our children how to brush their teeth properly.

  1. Guide the child's hand so that they can feel the movement of brushing their teeth properly.
  2. Use a mirror to help your child see the correct movement of the toothbrush.
  3. Make toothbrushing become a fun activity.
  4. Don't let children run around with toothbrushes in their mouths, as this can be dangerous.

The risk of a child experiencing cavities is higher if there is a family member who has cavities, the child consumes too many sugary foods and drinks, the child has special health problems, or the child wears braces or other dental aids. For that, don't hesitate to take your child to the dentist if there are complaints. This is also a habituation step for children so they are not afraid to visit the dentist.
