Why do we snore during sleep?

Health 1259

1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the soft tissues and muscles in the upper throat relax and collapse during sleep. When they relax, it can obstruct the airway and prevent normal breathing, leading to oxygen deprivation. As a result, the body reacts by choking or snoring loudly. This condition requires special attention.

2. Sleep Position

Perhaps many already know this, but some may not. Sleeping in a supine position increases the risk of snoring. Why does this happen? When we sleep on our backs, the weight on the soft palate and tongue is pushed back due to natural gravity. As a result, airflow is obstructed, causing someone to snore during sleep.

3. Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol causes muscles to relax, especially if consumed before bedtime. This results in significant obstruction of the airway, leading to snoring during sleep. Additionally, alcohol can make someone snore longer as the body remains relaxed for an extended period.

4. Certain Medications

Certain medications, such as antihistamines or sleeping pills, can relax the tissues in the mouth and throat more than usual. Consequently, they may block the airway, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, medications that cause the mouth and tongue to become excessively dry can also lead to snoring.

How to Address Snoring

In addition to the four causes mentioned above, several risk factors contribute to snoring, including overweight, pregnancy, postmenopause, aging, and physical features such as mouth or nose shape. If the condition is not caused by obstructive sleep apnea or other issues, the treatment is simpler and involves:

  • Changing sleep position to sleeping on the side or elevating the head higher than the bed
  • Losing weight
  • Reducing or quitting alcohol and smoking
  • Stopping the use of sleep aids or sedatives at night
  • Using special devices similar to mouth guards or splints

On the other hand, if snoring is caused by obstructive sleep apnea, the solution is to use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). This device delivers a constant stream of air to keep the airway open continuously. If snoring is caused by physical problems, surgery becomes a treatment option.

What if Someone Else's Snoring Disturbs Sleep?

Generally, people are more disturbed by the sound of someone else's snoring than their own, often to the point of being unable to sleep. The first step is to inform the person that they snore while sleeping, as they may not be aware of it, and it could be a sign of sleep apnea. Other unavoidable measures include:

  • Sleeping in separate rooms
  • Sleeping before the snorer falls asleep
  • Using earplugs
  • Listening to white noise (a steady sound across all frequencies audible to the ear)

So, there are many reasons why someone snores during sleep, such as obstructive sleep apnea, sleep position, alcohol consumption, use of sleep aids or sedatives, overweight, pregnancy, aging, and physical features of the mouth and nose. Snoring can be prevented by addressing its underlying causes.
