Have you ever heard the quirky advice that you shouldn't wash your jeans to keep them looking cool? It might sound a bit weird, right?

You may have seen viral photos of jeans so stiff they could stand up independently due to not being washed for an extended period. Some dedicated denim enthusiasts swear by the idea that the longer you avoid washing your jeans, the better they become. It's a concept that's, well, quite intriguing.

Even Chip Bergh, the CEO of the renowned denim brand Levi's, mentioned in a 2014 event that he hadn't washed his jeans for over a decade.

The debate around how to care for denim can indeed be perplexing. On the one hand, frequent washing can damage the fabric and cause the original color to fade. On the other hand, not washing your jeans regularly doesn't precisely align with a hygienic lifestyle.

However, denim enthusiasts have devised various tricks to battle the bacteria that can accumulate on unwashed jeans. Some have tried freezing or leaving them out in the wind and sun without washing them. Surprisingly, both methods are largely ineffective in eliminating germs and bacteria. So, what's the right way to care for your beloved denim?

According to Robert McMillan, the founder of Dearborn Denim, jeans are safe to wear without washing if they don't emit an unpleasant odour or cause discomfort. This is because avoiding excessive washing can extend the lifespan of your jeans. When it's time to wash them, use cold water and avoid mixing them with other garments. If you use a washing machine, opt for the gentlest cycle to prevent damage to the denim fibers. Afterwards, let them air dry, ensuring they are completely dry before wearing them again. Steer clear of the dryer, which can harm your denim's fibers.

So, the debate rages on whether to wash or not to wash your jeans. Ultimately, it depends on your comfort level and how you want to maintain your favorite denim pieces.
