Deepfake Disalahgunakan, Taylor Swift Jadi Korban

Deepfake Abused, Taylor Swift Becomes a Victim

Technology 1165

2023 Can Be Said to Be Taylor Swift's Year. Taylor is embarking on a world tour with the Eras Tour, which not only garnered praise from many but also became the highest-grossing concert tour of all time.

The monumental success of the Eras Tour led to the creation of a documentary film titled “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.” In the same year, Time magazine also awarded the prestigious "Person of the Year" title to the Pennsylvania-born singer.

But everything changed when Deepfake technology attacked…

Taylor had to face an extremely unpleasant incident: becoming a victim of pornographic content created by irresponsible individuals.

It's awful!

Sophisticated, But Dangerous

Unlike typical pornographic content, Deepfake victims never actually participated in, let alone starred in, the pornographic content. Deepfake allows users to manipulate photos or videos to make it appear as if someone is doing or saying something that never happened.

Unlike conventional image editing applications like Photoshop, Deepfake uses complex algorithms, making the results very difficult to distinguish from the original source.

Even more terrifying, Deepfake users can be anyone, not necessarily people who understand or are skilled in processing images or videos. Just a few clicks, and hoaxes and misinformation are ready to be spread.

Have you ever seen a video of someone speaking a foreign language fluently when that person actually can't speak it at all? That’s an example of Deepfake manipulation.

Deepfake's ability to spread false information very convincingly can be used for harmful purposes, including spreading slander, political manipulation, and online harassment, as experienced by Taylor.

As a result, Taylor not only has to face the spread of false information damaging her reputation but also bear the psychological burden of having her privacy utterly violated.

Besides Taylor, the misuse of Deepfake for pornographic content has victimized others worldwide, especially women.

The Emergence of Anti-Deepfake

So, can the misuse of Deepfake be prevented? It can, although it's difficult. The reason is, when we post photos or videos on the internet, everyone can access that data to be manipulated using Deepfake. The proliferation of platforms for sharing photos and videos makes it increasingly challenging to control its spread.

Recently, to address this issue, “Anti-Deepfake” technology has emerged, which can identify and analyze Deepfake manipulations. Additionally, this technology can provide watermarks for posts from the original source.

Although still in development, the presence of Anti-Deepfake at least offers some relief for social media users.

While waiting for Anti-Deepfake technology to mature and regulations to combat Deepfake misuse to become stricter, one preventive measure we can take now is to limit and carefully select personal posts on social media that might be misused by others.

If necessary, you can take a break from social media to clear your mind and engage in other activities.
