Ringworm: The Fungus in a Humid Environment

Health 1091

Athlete's foot, or medically termed tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that affects the outer layers of the skin, typically caused by warm, moist, and irritated conditions on the feet. This fungal infection is contagious and must be managed to prevent spreading to other parts of the body or to others.

Symptoms

Athlete's foot typically manifests between the toes, causing pain with a burning or stinging sensation, redness, and itching. In some cases, athlete's foot also leads to skin peeling. This fungal infection can usually be treated with over-the-counter medications available at pharmacies. Symptoms include:

  • Itchy, burning, or stinging sensation on the skin of the feet, particularly between the toes
  • Dry, scaly, red, and cracked skin on the feet
  • Fluid discharge, blisters, swelling, or crusting on cracked skin
  • Scaling patterns on the soles and sides of the feet

When athlete's foot becomes severe, open sores may occur, increasing the risk of bacterial infection. Left untreated, the infection can spread from one toe to another or even to other body areas due to scratching without washing hands first. Severe cases indicate complications.

Ringworm symptoms mainly appear between the toes causing a burning, itching and red sensation.

Causes

The fungus that causes athlete's foot is typically Trichophyton. This fungus naturally exists but does not harm the skin when it is dry and clean. However, it thrives rapidly in warm and moist conditions. This fungus is commonly found on floors and clothing. The preferred environments for the fungus that causes athlete's foot include:

  • Thick, tight, plastic-based shoes that compress the toes together, creating an ideal environment for fungal growth
  • Wet socks, sweaty feet, or leaving feet moist for extended periods
  • Public places without footwear, such as changing rooms, bathrooms, swimming pools, or public baths

Athlete's foot can spread through direct contact (healthy individuals touching infected areas of someone with athlete's foot) and indirect contact (through contaminated surfaces like clothing, socks, shoes, bed linens, and towels). Individuals with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to this fungal infection.

Diagnosis

Athlete's foot is diagnosed by observing typical symptoms. However, to rule out other skin conditions like dermatitis or psoriasis, a doctor may perform a potassium hydroxide test on skin lesions to identify fungal cells. This test is conducted under a microscope.

Treatment

Treatment for athlete's foot includes using antifungal creams like miconazole, available over-the-counter at pharmacies. For severe cases, a doctor may prescribe stronger antifungal medications like griseofulvin or terbinafine. Consult with a doctor or pharmacist for usage instructions.

Treatment of ringworm of the feet can be with over-the-counter antifungal creams

Prevention

Preventative measures against athlete's foot include:

  1. Washing feet with soap and water daily and drying them thoroughly, especially between the toes
  2. Washing socks, bed linens, and towels in water at least 60°C or higher
  3. Disinfecting shoes with disinfectant wipes (such as Clorox wipes) or spray
  4. Applying antifungal powder to the feet daily
  5. Avoiding wearing other people's socks, shoes, or towels
  6. Always wearing footwear in public places like public bathrooms, swimming pools, and other public areas
  7. Using socks made of breathable fibers like cotton or wool, or synthetic fibers that absorb moisture from the skin
  8. Avoiding reusing sweaty socks
  9. Wearing shoes made of materials with good air circulation

Athlete's foot is a common skin issue caused by a fungal infection. The primary treatment involves antifungal medications. However, it can be prevented through simple strategies, such as keeping feet clean, dry, and away from humid environments. Implementing these measures effectively significantly reduces the risk of athlete's foot. Let's not let the fungus win!
