Leucorrhoea is a symptom in the female reproductive organs in which women from the vagina experience a yellowish-white or grayish-white discharge. In general, we need to be aware of vaginal discharge that is yellowish to greenish, which has a large volume and gives off an unpleasant odor, and causes discomfort such as intense itching and burning sensation. But under normal conditions, the vaginal discharge that comes out is usually clear, colorless, or white and has no odor.
The causes of vaginal discharge in every woman can be different. Women's most common normal vaginal discharge is approximately six months before experiencing the first menstruation caused by hormonal changes. Leucorrhoea can also occur due to sexual stimulation, breastfeeding or stress experienced. Several health influences make women susceptible to vaginal discharge, namely:
- Diabetes
- Taking birth control pills and corticosteroid drugs
- There is irritation in the vaginal area
- Often wash or clean the vagina with water spray
- Use of soaps and lotions that contain perfume
- Having sex without a condom
- Frequently change partners
- Decreased immune system
- As well as thinning of the vaginal wall because it has entered menopause
There are several steps to prevent and overcome this abnormal vaginal discharge.
- Clean the vagina with warm water after urinating or defecating, and always dry it. Remember to wash from front to back to avoid carrying bacteria from the anus to the vagina.
- Avoid cleaning the vagina with water sprays, especially those too strong. This can cause the risk of loss of bacteria in the vagina, which functions as a vaginal protector from infection.
- Choose underwear that can absorb sweat to maintain the humidity level of the female area. Choose the right size, and don't wear tight underwear.
- Avoid using special vaginal soaps or other feminine products that contain perfume because these products can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the vagina.
- During menstruation, change pads every 4-6 hours. If you are in the phase of bleeding a lot during menstruation and you feel full, even though it's not time yet, immediately change the pads.
- Use a condom (protection) to avoid the risk of sexually transmitted infections (disease).
- Check the health of the vagina and other reproductive organs regularly with the obstetrician.
